Nicaragua is considered a water paradise and a surfer's dream, but it also has incredible fishing, hiking, and wildlife. Besides surfing and relaxing in Popoyo, you can explore the numerous lakes, lagoons, and rainforests of the region and even hike trails near active volcanoes. Popoyo and the town of Las Salinas also have an amazing village culture, the people are incredibly friendly and you can wander into town during the day or at night to hang out with the locals.

About Popoyo
Popoyo is a small beachside community on the pacific ocean about an 1 ½ north of San Juan del Sur or 2 ½ hours from Managua. Mainly rural, Popoyo recently has experienced rapid growth started by surfers drawn to the area for its high density of excellent waves, beautiful scenery . There are a variety of restaurants and accommodations in Popoyo and the list of activities available is long. Most people however choose to lay on the beach and surf. Popoyo's slow pace and relaxed Environment make it a great get away for people looking for a quiet surf vacation.

North of Poyoyo you have El Astillero, with views of the Chococente National Wildlife Refuge. This is a great place to buy fish and fresh lobster right off the fishing boat. Also Astillero is a great place to take a boat to the numerous surf spots in the area. North of Astillero is sparsely populated Chococente Nature Reserve, one of the most important turtle nesting beaches in the Americas.

South from Popoyo are some large scale private property developments including Rancho Santana, Hacienda Iguana, Guacalito. South of Tola area is Rivas which has the most well known beach destination in Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur.
